The month-long knockout stage moved through several major US hubs before reaching the final. Quarterfinal matches were held July 9-11 near Boston, Los Angeles, Miami and Kansas City, before the semifinals shifted the load onto Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on July 14 and 15. With the final now centered on the New York-New Jersey area, demand at those airports has peaked for the month.

The tournament-driven surge lands alongside several other developments reshaping travel this month. Riyadh Air is launching its first European routes, to Madrid and Manchester, expanding the young Saudi carrier’s international footprint. Cathay Pacific has cut fuel surcharges by a further 17 percent on tickets booked from July 16, its third such reduction since March, though surcharges remain roughly 70 percent above pre-conflict levels tied to the Middle East. TAP Air Portugal has also launched a new five-times-weekly nonstop service between Lisbon and Athens, giving travelers a more direct link between the two southern European capitals.

Aviation analysts say the concentration of a global sporting event across so many US hub airports within a single month offers an unusually clear stress test for post-pandemic capacity, with the industry watching closely how airports handle the final surge around this weekend’s championship match before summer leisure travel enters its own peak in August.
