GOL Enters Long-Haul Market With New Rio-New York Route Amid Global Route Boom

(WS News) – Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has entered the long-haul market for the first time, launching nonstop service between Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy airport, part of a wave of nearly 50 new international routes reshaping global air travel this month.

The Rio-New York route operates three times weekly and marks a historic shift for GOL, an airline that has historically focused on domestic and regional service within Brazil. The flights are initially being operated using a Wamos Air Airbus A330-200 under a wet-lease arrangement, with GOL set to transition the route to its own A330-900neo aircraft as deliveries begin later this year. The launch supports parent company Abra Group’s broader strategy of developing Rio de Janeiro as an international aviation hub.

The new service is part of a broader surge in international route launches this July, as airlines across multiple continents expand aggressively to meet strong passenger demand. Qatar Airways has launched a twice-weekly Doha-Bogotá-Caracas service connecting the Middle East with Colombia and Venezuela, while Air Canada has begun Montreal-Berlin service using its A321XLR aircraft, marking the jet’s first operation at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. Dubai-based Flydubai has also launched daily flights between Dubai and Bangkok, its second Thai destination alongside Krabi.

Industry analysts say the wave of new connections, spanning South America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, reflects airline confidence in sustained international travel growth and a shift away from simply restoring older routes toward building faster, more direct and commercially sustainable long-haul networks.
