Thompson wins PGA John Deere Classic in record fashion

Davis Thompson started strong by birdieing five of the first six holes and went on to secure a commanding four-stroke victory at the John Deere Classic on Sunday, claiming his inaugural PGA Tour title.

The 25-year-old American posted a remarkable seven-under par 64 to finish at a tournament-record 28-under 256 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. This surpassed the previous record of 27-under set by Michael Kim in 2018.

Thompson’s hot start included consecutive birdies on holes nine and ten, bouncing back from his sole bogey at the 12th with another birdie on the 14th, and then maintaining his composure to par out the remaining holes.

“I focused on staying in the moment throughout the day,” said Thompson. “When that final putt dropped, it was a huge relief.”

Finishing tied for second place at 260 were Taiwan’s C.T. Pan, amateur Luke Clanton, and Michael Thorbjornsen of the US. Ben Griffin, who carded a 62, and Carson Young followed closely behind.

“This win means a lot to me,” Thompson reflected. “I’ve been working hard this year, and things really clicked in the past month. After coming close last week and earlier this year, it feels great to finally get the victory.”

Thompson and Pan secured spots in the upcoming British Open at Royal Troon, an additional achievement for both players.

“In addition to winning this tournament, qualifying for the Open was a significant goal,” Thompson added. “I’m thrilled to have accomplished both.”

Thompson also had the fortune of staying in the same “Trophy House” where previous John Deere champions J.T. Poston and Sepp Straka had stayed. Despite the associated costs, Thompson expressed his intent to hold on to this lucky charm.

“While I may have to foot the bill for the house, I’m definitely not giving up my spot,” he joked.

Luke Clanton, although missing out on qualifying for the Open, made history as the first amateur since 1958 to finish in the top-10 in consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour.

Davis Thompson’s stellar performance at the John Deere Classic marks a milestone in his career, cementing his status as a rising star on the PGA Tour.
