South Korea Unveils Fanomenon, New K-Culture Festival Set for December 2027

(WS News) – South Korea has unveiled plans for Fanomenon, a new 11-day K-culture festival built around K-pop concerts and a fandom-focused awards show, set to debut in December 2027 as a Korean answer to Coachella and Lollapalooza.

The plan was released by the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, co-chaired by Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young and JYP Entertainment founder J.Y. Park, backed by a state-private partnership expected to draw roughly 200,000 visitors from abroad and generate an economic impact of more than one trillion won. The name combines “fan” and “phenomenon,” a deliberate choice by organizers to frame fans as partners in spreading Korean culture rather than as passive consumers of it.

The festival will run from December 2 to 12, 2027, opening with a gala on its first night, and will be split across two venues: Seoul Arena in Changdong, northern Seoul, which is scheduled for completion in May 2027, and a second exhibition hall at Kintex in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. Seoul Arena is set to host concerts across six days spanning two weekends, with multiple acts featured on each bill, while the fandom-centered awards show will anchor the broader event.

The initiative builds on South Korea’s growing state-backed push to formalize and expand its cultural exports, following the launch of the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange last October, whose founding ceremony was attended by members of groups including Stray Kids and Le Sserafim. Organizers are betting that combining large-scale concerts with an awards format built around fan engagement will help cement Seoul’s status as a global hub for K-pop tourism.
