Rodriguez inspires Colombia into Copa America last four with 5-0 win over Panama

Confident Colombia advanced to the semifinals of the Copa America with an impressive 5-0 victory over Panama on Saturday, setting up a clash with Uruguay in the next round. James Rodriguez starred once again, contributing two assists and a penalty goal as Colombia extended their unbeaten streak to 27 games. They will face Uruguay in Charlotte on Wednesday, following Uruguay’s penalty shootout victory over Brazil. Meanwhile, Argentina will face surprise team Canada in the other semifinal in New Jersey.

Colombia took an early lead through Jhon Cordoba’s header in the eighth minute, followed by Rodriguez’s penalty seven minutes later after Jhon Arias was fouled. Despite Panama’s efforts, Colombia effectively sealed the game before halftime when Rodriguez’s quick free-kick found Luis Diaz, who chipped the ball over the keeper to make it 3-0. Richard Rios added a fourth with a powerful shot in the 70th minute, and Miguel Borja scored a late penalty to complete the rout.

Rodriguez, known for his standout performances in major tournaments, expressed satisfaction with Colombia’s performance and looked forward to progressing further. Panama coach Thomas Christiansen acknowledged the tough result but praised his team’s efforts and emphasized the need to learn from the experience for future tournaments, including the 2026 World Cup qualification.
