New head coach Gillespie vows consistency in Pakistan Test side

Jason Gillespie, former Australian fast bowler, has pledged to instill consistency in Pakistan’s Test cricket team following his appointment as red-ball coach. His tenure kicks off with a busy six-month schedule, beginning with a two-match series against Bangladesh next month, followed by a home series against England consisting of three Tests in October. Further challenges await with a tour to South Africa in December and hosting the West Indies for two Tests in January next year.

Arriving in Pakistan recently, Gillespie acknowledged the team’s talent but emphasized the need for greater consistency. He aims to improve Pakistan’s current fifth position in the World Test Championship standings and stressed the importance of winning Test matches against strong international opponents.

Drawing from his extensive experience as a player and successful coaching stints, including leading Yorkshire to consecutive English County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015, Gillespie aims to elevate Pakistan’s Test cricket performance. Reflecting on recent setbacks, such as losses to Australia and England, he highlighted missed opportunities and identified areas for improvement, particularly in fielding.

Looking ahead, Gillespie is preparing the team to face England’s aggressive style of play under coach Brendon McCullum, emphasizing the need for strategic and smart cricket. Despite recent disappointments in limited-overs formats, Gillespie is focused on Pakistan’s upcoming Test challenges, starting with Bangladesh in August followed by England in October, with confidence in the team’s capability to rise to the occasion.
