More Than 500 Feared Dead After Rohingya Refugee Boats Capsize Off Myanmar

(WS News) – More than 500 people are feared dead after two boats carrying Rohingya refugees capsized in the Bay of Bengal, UN agencies said Thursday, marking one of the deadliest incidents on what officials call the world’s most dangerous maritime migration route.

Two Boats, Two Tragedies

According to the International Organization for Migration and the UN refugee agency, the two vessels left Myanmar’s Rakhine state in late June carrying mostly Rohingya passengers, including some who had traveled from refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh. One boat, carrying an estimated 250 people, lost contact shortly after departure. A second boat, believed to be carrying around 280 people, is thought to have sunk off Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. Casualty figures have not yet been officially confirmed.

A Pattern of Deadly Crossings

The Rohingya, a persecuted minority who have faced decades of discrimination in Myanmar, increasingly attempt the dangerous sea crossing toward Malaysia in overcrowded and poorly equipped boats. The latest disaster adds to nearly 900 Rohingya reported dead or missing on similar journeys in 2025 alone, according to UN figures, with more than 300 additional deaths or disappearances already recorded on the same route earlier this year.

Calls for Stronger Regional Response

UN agencies are urging stronger regional cooperation, improved search-and-rescue capacity, and action against human trafficking networks operating along the route. Officials also warned that cuts to foreign aid are undermining local protection efforts for displaced people, at a time when roughly 1.2 million Rohingya remain in refugee camps in Bangladesh with limited prospects for a durable solution.
