Yamal comes of age with wonder goal to fire Spain into Euro 2024 final

Lamine Yamal has been outstanding throughout Euro 2024, but it was in Munich on Tuesday where he truly announced himself, scoring a remarkable goal against France to propel Spain into the final with a 2-1 victory.

Despite an initial lead from Randal Kolo Muani, France was left stunned by the 16-year-old’s unexpected strike early in the game, making him the youngest ever scorer in the tournament’s history. This pivotal moment shifted momentum in Spain’s favor, with Dani Olmo sealing the win just minutes later.

Yamal, known for his playmaking abilities earlier in the tournament, had not yet found the net himself until this crucial match. Reflecting on his performance, he modestly described his goal: “We were trailing, I received the ball, and without overthinking it, I took my shot.”

At just 16, Yamal has rapidly risen in prominence, becoming a key figure for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team. His maturity and skill have drawn comparisons to his childhood idol, Lionel Messi, with whom he has a touching connection dating back to his early years.

Coach Luis de la Fuente praised Yamal’s impact, stating, “We are fortunate to have him in Spain, where he continues to astound us with his talent.”

Looking ahead to the final against either England or the Netherlands, Yamal remains focused on his goal: “To win, that’s what I want for my birthday.”
