Woeful Italy sent packing from Euro 2024 by super Swiss strikes

Switzerland’s Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas scored exceptional goals to knock defending champions Italy out of Euro 2024 in the Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory, exposing Italy’s disjointed and lackluster performance under coach Luciano Spalletti.

Switzerland defended resolutely, taking advantage of Italy’s poor passing and decision-making. Italy struggled to retain possession and failed to apply effective pressure, ultimately sealing their exit from the tournament.

On a hot evening in Berlin, Switzerland missed an opportunity to take the lead in the 24th minute when Breel Embolo’s attempt on goal was comfortably saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite a slow start, Switzerland grew into the game, dominating possession as Italy faltered.

Italy’s Stephan El Shaarawy provided a fleeting moment of threat in the first half, but his efforts were not enough to lift his team. Switzerland broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a well-crafted goal, as Michel Aebischer’s pass found Ruben Vargas, whose precise delivery allowed Remo Freuler to score confidently.

Italy’s fortunes worsened at the start of the second half when Ruben Vargas doubled Switzerland’s lead with a superb curling shot. Although Italy had chances, including Fabian Schaer’s near own goal, they were unable to breach Switzerland’s defense effectively.

Italian coach Luciano Spalletti admitted his team lacked pace and incisiveness, particularly in the first half, reflecting on their inability to match Switzerland’s intensity. Despite late attempts, including Gianluca Scammacca hitting the post, Italy failed to mount a significant comeback, disappointing their fans who left the stadium early.

Switzerland celebrated their well-deserved victory, looking forward to facing the winner of the England vs Slovakia match in Dusseldorf next Saturday. Midfielder Fabian Rieder praised Switzerland’s team spirit and determination, contrasting it with Italy’s lackluster performance that led to their elimination from the competition.
