WASHINGTON (WSN) — The White House announced on Friday (Aug 23) that the talks in Cairo aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza have been “constructive” with some progress made. All parties involved need to collaborate on implementing the proposed agreement.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby informed reporters that the discussions would continue with CIA Director Bill Burns and US Middle East envoy Brett McGurk representing the United States.
Kirby emphasized that Hamas needs to join the negotiations. On Thursday, the talks involved negotiators from Israel, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, but not Hamas.
“We’re in Cairo; they’re in Cairo. We need Hamas to participate and finalize the details,” Kirby stated, noting that further discussions would take place over the weekend.
Kirby reported that the initial signs from Cairo were positive, though additional talks are necessary. He refuted claims in some news reports that the negotiations were on the verge of collapse.
