Verstappen faces a challenging reality as McLaren demonstrates top qualifying speed.

Formula One leader Max Verstappen expressed dissatisfaction with Red Bull’s car performance after McLaren secured the front row in a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday.

Verstappen, a three-time world champion with seven wins this season, will start third on Sunday at a circuit notorious for its limited overtaking opportunities.

“While the upgrades we brought here seem to be working, we’re still not at the front. So we need more. It’s that simple,” the Dutch driver told reporters.

His frustration was evident, particularly after his final flying lap where he visibly showed disappointment by banging the steering wheel upon crossing the line.

“Reflecting on my qualifying, I was pleased with my laps, but the balance is really on the edge. I’m pushing to the limit,” he explained.

“I feel like I’m pushing harder than last year, but it’s not translating into faster lap times. So clearly, we have work to do.”

Verstappen dominated last year with 19 victories as Red Bull enjoyed their most dominant season ever, winning all but one of the 22 races.

This year, Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren have all taken wins, with six different drivers standing atop the podium in 12 races.

“McLaren seems to have the quickest car now,” Verstappen acknowledged. “We’ll do our best, aim for a stable car balance, and hope I can keep up with them.”

Regarding his decision not to participate in the final minutes of qualifying after Yuki Tsunoda’s crash, Verstappen clarified that he had no fresh tires left and thus no chance of improving his position.

“I didn’t see the point in waiting in the pit lane with used tires. It wouldn’t have made a difference,” he concluded.
