ISLAMABAD (WS News) – Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said the government is taking all possible measures to reduce electricity tariff and protect the rights of the consumers.

The minister said the government was reviewing agreements with power plants and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) through mutual understanding.

Owais Leghari said the burden of loans and high interest rate were affecting the consumers enormously.

To a question, he said all power plants need to review their profit plans to benefit the consumers.

He said affordable electricity for the industrial sector was priority of the government, reiterating that the main reasons for increase in electricity tariff were lack of strategic planning, burden of loans and high interest rates on consumers.

The federal minister added that the government was re-negotiating its energy sector agreements with China, with the aim of getting more sustainable and low-cost energy for the country.
