OpenAI Closes Record $122 Billion Funding Round at $852 Billion Valuation

(WS News) – OpenAI has closed the largest private funding round in its history, raising $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion, as competition among frontier AI developers for capital and compute continues to intensify.

The round drew major backing from Amazon, which contributed $50 billion, alongside Nvidia and SoftBank, which each invested $30 billion. The scale of the raise underscores how deeply the biggest names in cloud computing, chipmaking and telecoms are now embedded in OpenAI’s balance sheet, and by extension in the broader AI infrastructure buildout.

OpenAI reported $2.6 billion in monthly revenue and 900 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, figures that illustrate the product’s reach even as the company continues to burn through capital on training and compute costs. The company has also signaled it may pursue an initial public offering later this year, a move that would mark one of the most closely watched listings in recent memory given the scale of investor interest already shown in the private markets.

The funding round lands amid a broader wave of capital flowing into AI infrastructure. Elsewhere in the sector, Nvidia has separately committed $2 billion toward chip and data-center partnerships, while Microsoft has continued a $50 billion initiative aimed at closing the AI adoption gap between wealthier and poorer nations. Analysts tracking the sector say the pace of investment reflects a belief among the largest technology companies that AI is shifting from an experimental add-on to core infrastructure, though some caution that valuations at this scale leave little room for a slowdown in enterprise adoption.
