Hasaranga steps down as captain following Sri Lanka’s premature departure from the T20 World Cup.

Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned from his role as captain of the Sri Lankan national team following their early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Appointed as T20I captain just last year, Hasaranga led the team in 10 matches. In his resignation letter, released by Sri Lankan Cricket, he expressed that stepping down from captaincy would best serve the team’s interests while he continues as a player.

“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga wrote in his letter.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Hasaranga would remain an integral part of their squads moving forward. Sri Lanka is scheduled to face India in a home white-ball bilateral series starting on 26th July, with the squad and captain yet to be announced.
