State Intervention in Cricket Administration
The Sri Lankan government has assumed control of the country’s cricket board, announcing the formation of a nine-member interim committee to oversee operations and initiate structural reforms.
According to official statements, all administrative responsibilities of the board have been temporarily transferred to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, effective immediately.
Longstanding Concerns Over Governance
The cricket board, despite being the most financially powerful sporting institution in the country, has faced persistent allegations of corruption, inefficiency, and poor management.
These issues have raised serious concerns about governance standards and transparency within the organization, prompting repeated calls for reform.
Previous International Action
Concerns over political involvement in cricket administration had already drawn international attention. The global governing body for cricket had previously suspended the country for a period due to interference in board operations.
This history has added further pressure on authorities to ensure that governance reforms are credible and sustainable.
New Leadership Appointed
As part of the restructuring effort, the government has appointed a new interim leadership team. The committee will be headed by a former investment banker and political figure, supported by several prominent names from the cricketing community.
The newly formed group includes former national captain Kumar Sangakkara, along with experienced former Test players such as Sidath Wettimuny and Roshan Mahanama.
Mandate for Structural Reform
The interim administration has been tasked with addressing the current challenges facing cricket in the country and implementing long-term structural changes.
Authorities have emphasized that the objective is to restore integrity, improve governance, and strengthen the overall management of the sport.
Leadership Resigns Following Intervention
The move follows the resignation of the board’s president and the entire executive committee, which stepped down shortly after the government’s decision to intervene.

The administrative shake-up comes in the wake of disappointing results on the international stage, including an early exit from a major global T20 tournament earlier this year.
