Former champion Ostapenko wins Eastbourne opener as Rybakina withdraws

Jelena Ostapenko began her campaign for a second Eastbourne title with a determined straight-sets victory over Greet Minnen in the first round of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament on Monday. The Latvian, seeded fifth, and the 2021 Eastbourne champion, defeated the Belgian qualifier 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 in a match lasting just under 90 minutes.

Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, had a tense moment when she slipped on the grass during the second set, but she recovered well to secure the win, currently ranked 13th in the world.
