Aguirre has been appointed as the head coach of Mexico for the third time.

Javier Aguirre was appointed as the head coach of Mexico’s national soccer team on Monday, taking over from Jaime Lozano who was dismissed earlier this month following Mexico’s disappointing exit in the Copa America group stage, announced the country’s football federation (FMF).

This marks Aguirre’s third tenure leading the team, having previously guided Mexico to the knockout stages of the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, as well as securing victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009.

Rafael Marquez, currently managing Barcelona’s reserve team, has been named Aguirre’s primary assistant coach. The duration of Aguirre’s contract was not specified.

“Both are respected leaders with distinct personal approaches,” stated Duilio Davino, director of the men’s national team. “Aguirre is known for his leadership that motivates and persuades players and staff through his strategic vision and ability to build strong team bonds.

“Rafa leads by example, drawing on his experience as a top-level player in Mexico and Europe.”

In his previous two spells as coach, Aguirre achieved 38 wins, 12 losses, and 11 draws, setting a national team record for matches managed with at least 34 appearances.
