Patrick Kane Returns to Chicago Blackhawks on Two-Year Deal

(WS News) – Patrick Kane is heading back to Chicago, agreeing to a two-year contract with the Blackhawks worth an average of $8 million annually as the franchise icon returns to the team where he became an NHL superstar.

The 37-year-old winger spent 16 seasons with the Blackhawks, helping deliver three Stanley Cups, before being traded to the New York Rangers in 2023 as Chicago began a rebuild centered on top draft pick Connor Bedard. Kane went on to sign three consecutive one-year deals with the Detroit Red Wings, most recently posting 57 points on 16 goals and 41 assists across 67 games last season. According to Kane’s agent, Pat Brisson, roughly 10 legitimate suitors pursued Kane in free agency, with the winger weighing a return to Chicago against a homecoming to his native Buffalo to sign with the Sabres before ultimately choosing the Blackhawks.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson, who made the difficult call to trade Kane three years ago in pursuit of the draft lottery that brought Chicago Bedard, called the reunion a fitting next chapter, saying Kane’s dazzling skill created some of the most memorable moments in franchise history. Bedard, for his part, had publicly lobbied for Kane’s return, saying it would be “incredible” to finally share the ice with the player he grew up idolizing. The two have never played a game together.

The timing carries added significance for the Blackhawks, who will open the 2026-27 season without Bedard for the opening stretch after the young center underwent shoulder surgery this offseason. Chicago is hoping Kane can help offset the early loss of its top-line center before the two ultimately share the ice later in the season. Kane’s new deal includes a full no-movement clause, according to his agent.
