MEXICO CITY (WSN) – President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday that the judicial reform proposed by Mexico’s government will not breach the country’s obligations under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The contentious reform, scheduled for a vote in September, seeks to establish that all judges, including Supreme Court justices, be elected through a popular vote.
Sheinbaum, who will assume office in October, has supported the judicial proposal put forth by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, agreeing that judges should be elected.
On Wednesday, federal judiciary workers in Mexico were on their third day of strike in protest of the reform.
The proposed changes have unsettled the markets, contributing to a more than 2% drop in the value of Mexico’s peso by midday Wednesday.
