CHICAGO (WSN) — On Monday, Democrats convened in Chicago to celebrate Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign against Republican Donald Trump and to honor President Joe Biden, whose decision to exit the race revitalized his party’s prospects.

The Democratic National Convention kicked off a four-day event, expected to attract tens of thousands of protesters. Many of these demonstrators are critical of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s Gaza offensive and will march along a mile-long route outside the event’s security zone.

President Biden, 81, who stepped down from his reelection bid last month amid concerns from prominent Democrats about his age and ability to serve another term, is scheduled to speak at 10:50 p.m. Eastern Time (0250 Tuesday GMT). He will advocate for electing Harris and defeating former President Trump, 78.

As Democrats aim to convey unity following the significant shift in candidates, Harris, 59, is expected to join Biden on stage where he will symbolically transfer the leadership role to her.

Harris will officially accept the nomination with a highly anticipated speech on Thursday night. If elected on November 5, she would make history as the first female president of the United States.
