ISLAMABAD (WSN) – On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating electricity theft, reducing line losses, and enhancing the power distribution system nationwide.

He announced that new board chairmen and members have been appointed to five power distribution companies (DISCOs) through a transparent process, with the expectation that these changes will boost DISCOs’ performance.

During a meeting to review the Power Ministry’s issues, the prime minister instructed the Power Minister and Secretary of the Power Division to work with provincial authorities to address electricity theft, improve DISCO performance, and tackle other sector-related concerns.

“The government must adopt a unified approach to combat power theft across the country,” the prime minister emphasized.

He also directed provincial governments to ensure adequate police and Tehsildar presence according to the needs of DISCOs.

Additionally, he mandated that authorities take strict action against corruption within the power distribution companies and enhance the effectiveness of the kutchehri system for addressing public complaints.

PM Shehbaz called for an immediate meeting of the steering committee responsible for transitioning agricultural tubewells in Balochistan to solar energy.

The meeting reviewed the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for this transition and discussed a forthcoming package to recognize high-performing officers.

Attendees included Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Power Awais Khan Leghari, and other relevant officials.
