Giron secures his first ATP title by winning the Hall of Fame Open.

Marcos Giron clinched his debut ATP title on Sunday, overcoming fellow American Alex Michelsen 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the Hall of Fame Open. The Paris Olympics-bound Giron, who will turn 31 this week, rallied from a match point down in the third set to become the ninth player this year, and the first on grass, to secure his maiden ATP title.

“I’m turning 31 but I feel youthful, I feel strong, and I’m eager for more,” Giron remarked. “Hopefully, at the Olympics, we can bring home a medal and make a deep run.”

During the intense final in Newport, Rhode Island, Giron delivered 13 aces, crucially saving a match point in the 10th game of the decisive set before ultimately claiming victory after two hours and 37 minutes.

Following his triumph, Giron shared a heartfelt moment with Michelsen, acknowledging his opponent’s promising future in tennis. By defeating the 19-year-old Michelsen, who finished as runner-up in Newport for the second consecutive year, Giron will ascend from 46th to 38th place in the upcoming world rankings.

Giron initially broke in the opening game of their first ATP encounter, but Michelsen fought back to level at 3-3. Giron saved multiple break points in the eighth game to maintain parity at 4-4. Despite Michelsen’s strong performance, including a tie-breaker win in the first set, Giron managed to break early in the second set and maintain his momentum to force a decisive third set.

In the final set, Giron demonstrated resilience by saving a match point with a crucial ace, followed by holding serve and breaking Michelsen in the 11th game to seize control. He held his nerve in the final game to secure his long-awaited ATP title.

Giron, who had previously fallen short in ATP finals in San Diego and Dallas, expressed immense joy at finally clinching a championship, especially with an ace on match point against Michelsen.
