Sweden’s Aberg surged ahead to take the lead in the second round of the Scottish Open.

Swedish young talent Ludvig Aberg surged to the top of the Scottish Open leaderboard after the second round on Friday.

Aberg shot another impressive round of 64 to take a one-shot lead over French golfer Antoine Rozner.

The 24-year-old played without any bogeys, recording six birdies to reach 12 under par at the Renaissance Club.

Rozner, maintaining a flawless performance so far, matched Aberg’s second round score of 64 following his opening round of 65 in this preparatory event ahead of next week’s British Open at Royal Troon.

Italy’s Matteo Manassero and South Korea’s Im Sung-jae were tied at 10 under after carding rounds of 63 and 67 respectively.

“It’s been a great day. I felt we executed our game plan very well,” Aberg commented.

Aberg turned professional just last year in June and secured his spot in the Ryder Cup with a victory in the final qualifying event in Switzerland in September.

Described as a “talent of his generation,” Aberg was given a wild card by Europe captain Luke Donald. He partnered with Viktor Hovland to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka as Europe won the trophy.

In November, he clinched his first PGA Tour title at the RSM Classic and finished runner-up to Scheffler at The Masters in April, his debut major championship.

Remaining grounded despite his recent successes, Aberg remarked, “I wouldn’t call myself a superstar. I just focus on playing good golf. While these past 12 months have changed my life on the golf course, off the course, I remain the same.”

First-round leader Justin Thomas struggled with a two-over 72, falling six shots behind the leader.

Rory McIlroy shot a 66 to reach nine under par, aiming to rebound from his disappointing US Open performance where he narrowly missed victory at Pinehurst.
