West Indies captain Brathwaite is encouraged by the team’s recovery against Australia following their defeat by England.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite expressed confidence that his team could bounce back against England, despite a heavy innings and 114-run defeat in the first Test at Lord’s on Friday. Brathwaite pointed out that their earlier tour of Australia this year provided valuable experience in similar circumstances. The West Indies struggled with just one warm-up game to adjust to English conditions, with several inexperienced players in the top order. They suffered collapses in both innings, with debutant fast bowler Gus Atkinson claiming 12 wickets, supported by veteran James Anderson in his final Test match.

Only tailender Gudakesh Motie managed to score over 30 runs in the second innings, as England wrapped up the match before lunch on the third day. Brathwaite acknowledged the batting disappointment and emphasized the need for improvement. Looking ahead to the second Test in Nottingham, he highlighted the team’s ability and urged mental strength and resilience after defeat.

Reflecting on Anderson’s retirement after a distinguished career, Brathwaite paid tribute to the bowler’s legendary status but admitted relief that they would not face him again. He drew parallels with their turnaround in Australia earlier this year, where they recovered from an initial loss to draw the series. Brathwaite remained optimistic about their chances, urging his team to stay mentally tough and fight back strongly in the upcoming matches.
