Jannik Sinner felt unwell and dizzy during his match against Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Despite his discomfort and a restless night before, Sinner, recently ranked No. 1, was determined not to withdraw. However, he struggled physically throughout the match, receiving treatment and briefly leaving the court during the third set. Despite a spirited effort, Sinner eventually succumbed to a determined Daniil Medvedev, who won 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3.
“I was struggling physically,” Sinner admitted afterward. “It was not an easy moment. I tried to fight with what I had today.”
Despite winning their last five encounters, including a memorable five-set final at this year’s Australian Open, Sinner couldn’t overcome Medvedev’s aggressive play at Wimbledon. Medvedev, typically known for his baseline game, adapted well and capitalized on key moments to secure victory and advance to the semifinals against Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner, known for his powerful forehand, rallied and even forced a fifth set, marking the 36th five-set match of the tournament, a record in the Open era. Despite statistically outperforming Medvedev in several areas—winning more points, producing more winners, and making fewer errors—Sinner couldn’t convert his opportunities.
Medvedev acknowledged the match’s ups and downs but credited his tactical adjustments for the win, particularly in the decisive fifth set where he broke early and maintained his lead.
With Sinner’s exit, Medvedev sets up an intriguing semifinal clash with the young phenom Alcaraz, who secured his place with a convincing win over Tommy Paul. Alcaraz, the defending champion and seeking his fourth Grand Slam title, showcased his resilience and ability to elevate his game when needed.
In other Wimbledon action, Donna Vekic reached her first major semifinal after overcoming early challenges, while Jasmine Paolini continued her strong run with a dominant victory. The exits of Sinner and earlier of top-seeded Iga Swiatek mark a rare occurrence since 2018 where both top seeds have exited before the semifinals.
For Sinner, despite this setback, his recent rise to No. 1 and strong performances signal promising prospects ahead, both in tennis and in life.
