No knee worries as Djokovic eases past Kopriva into Wimbledon round two

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic reassured everyone about his knee condition with a commanding performance, defeating Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-1 6-2 6-2 on Tuesday to advance to the second round.

Despite wearing support on his right leg following a recent minor surgery less than a month ago for a meniscus tear that forced him out of the French Open, the 37-year-old Serb showed no signs of vulnerability. He did not face a single break point and secured victory in just under two hours.

“I tried to stay focused on my game and not dwell too much on my knee,” Djokovic commented after the match. “My team and I have been working diligently over the past three weeks to prepare for today’s match.”

Reflecting on his decision to compete at Wimbledon despite the injury, Djokovic expressed his deep affection for the tournament. “If it were any other event, I might not have taken the risk or rushed my return as much. But Wimbledon holds a special place in my heart, and I am grateful to be back here.”

Acknowledging the success of his surgery, Djokovic thanked his surgeon for enabling him to continue playing at the highest level without major setbacks. “I’ve been fortunate not to have been away from tennis for too long,” he added.

In the match, Djokovic broke Kopriva’s serve on his sixth attempt during a lengthy fourth game, swiftly claiming the first set under the Centre Court roof. He continued to dominate, breaking Kopriva again in the second set after a grueling 21-shot rally, which further boosted his momentum. Despite some early resistance in the third set from Kopriva, Djokovic elevated his game to secure a comprehensive victory.

Currently aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title to end his trophy drought this year, Djokovic demonstrated his determination and form, proving he remains a formidable contender at Wimbledon.
