Bronny James says he can handle ‘amplified’ pressure of playing for Lakers with his famous father

Bronny James emphasized that his decision to enter the NBA draft was not influenced by the opportunity to play alongside his famous father, LeBron James. Despite being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 55th overall pick, Bronny asserted that establishing his own identity and skills on the court were his primary goals.

During a news conference at the Lakers’ training complex, Bronny stated, “I’m … trying to get my name out for myself. I just want to come in and get my work in and get better every day. I never really had a thought of me going to play with my dad. That’s always there to take part of, but it wasn’t a main focus of mine.”

Acknowledging the added scrutiny and pressure that comes with being LeBron James’ son and potentially making NBA history, Bronny highlighted that he’s accustomed to dealing with high expectations from media and social media. He expressed readiness to navigate through these challenges, noting that while the attention is more intense now, he is confident in his ability to handle it.

Bronny clarified that his decision to enter the NBA draft wasn’t driven by a desire to fulfill his father’s dream of playing together in the league. He also recognized that he had no control over where he would be drafted, dismissing speculation about nepotism influencing the Lakers’ decision.

The 19-year-old, eldest son of LeBron James, further shared insights from his father’s guidance throughout his life, emphasizing the importance of hard work, coachability, and dedication, which have prepared him for the professional challenges ahead.

Bronny James plans to bypass another year in college basketball to develop under the Lakers’ player development system led by new coach JJ Redick. Redick highlighted Bronny’s skills and potential for growth, emphasizing that Bronny earned his opportunity through his own efforts and merits.

Both Bronny James and Dalton Knecht, the Lakers’ first-round pick, anticipate playing in the team’s summer league squads in Sacramento and Las Vegas this month. If Bronny makes the Lakers’ regular-season roster, he and LeBron James could potentially join a rare list of father-son duos who have played together in major North American professional sports leagues.
